CHANGNING 11-12PM
Mathematics is extremely important in fifth grade because it shed light onto many junior high knowledge. Our instructional course will focus on a majority of three aspects:
1. Fraction calculation: With the fraction concept laid in third grade and the principles of operations laid in grade four, we hope students will fully control the calculation of fraction within the four operations. They will develop fluency in addition and subtraction by changing the different fractions to the same denominator. We will help them with the crossing method. They will further use the definition of fraction to operate multiplications and divisions.
2. More complex division calculation: Division calculation will develop from the single-digit to two-digit divisor. We will help them to understand how division procedure works and finalize the fluency with the multi-digit four operations.
3. Evolving from 2D to 3D: Under our instruction, students will start to connect the space in reality to the mathematically defined 3D space. In this case, they will start to acknowledge the concept of volume, understanding the quantity of it as the total number of same-sized unit volume required to fill in a specific space.
Puzzles can be geometric, number based or just pure mathematical reasoning. By the end of each week, students will have produced a written research report, and prepared an oral presentation for classmates and parents.
Mathematics in fifth grade is the reflection of the outcome of one’s understanding of mathematics throughout primary. Our teacher will put some times to review the crucial definition in arithmetic and geometry while preparing student for future challenges.

CHANGNING 10-11AM
Fourth grade is a review and an extension of the knowledge learnt in the previous grades. In this course directed to fourth graders, we will review and enhance our grasp on arithmetic and the base-ten system, further the research on fraction and deepen our understanding of 2-D diagrams.
1. Arithmetic and base-ten system: The scope of arithmetic will develop from 1,000 to 1,000,000. With the understanding multiplication in third grade, students will start to do multiplication of multi-digit whole numbers. We will help students to develop fluency in different efficient methods of multiplying whole numbers. Together with their understanding in the base-ten system, students will develop generalizable procedures to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends.
2. Fraction equivalence and four operations of fractions: Students will recognize that some fractions lies on the exact same place on the number line, thus, understanding that these fractions are equivalent. Students will then extend their understanding of unit fractions to develop complex fractions and decompose complex fractions to unit fractions.
3. Research on to two dimensional shapes: Students will be reveal to a new geometry concept —similar. By simply looking at diagrams, they will find, intuitively, that some graphs resembles in shape. The course aims to help students to understand the definition of similar in mathematics and how this definition complies with our logic.
3. Alert the students with the importance of using standard units. Abstract unit concepts like centimeters or inch will be learnt in practices, enabling them to estimate in standard units. Further, students will learn how to use rulers correctly to measure the distance.
4. The course in fourth grade aims to deepen student’s understanding in fundamental areas like base systems, arithmetic and geometry so students will be provided with a better basis for future investigations like a different base-system, especially the base-two system, or to group theory that led light onto binary operations.

People’s ability to process graphs and their capability to think logically started to mature at the age of eight. The goal of this set of courses is to nurture the children’s logic in algebra and geometry. This course will focus on four aspects:
Mathematical Explorations takes us on an adventure to find these patterns for ourselves using skills we already have and developing new ones along the way.
1. Students understand and get familiar with the base-ten system. This includes counting in fives, tens, etc. Moreover, they will know how the numbers we use today are composed in the base-ten system, learning the concept of ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and their relationships.
2. Acquaint students with the rules of addition and subtraction. Students will fluently complete addition and subtraction within a hundred after playing arithmetic games with fellow students. We hope they will be able to add and subtract within 1000, after having a deep understanding in our base-ten system.
3. Alert the students with the importance of using standard units. Abstract unit concepts like centimeters or inch will be learnt in practices, enabling them to estimate in standard units. Further, students will learn how to use rulers correctly to measure the distance.
4. Students will learn how to describe and analyze graphs — in a way by counting the numbers of sides, and measuring the length and angles of the graph. By letting students to draw and analyze their own graphs, we hope they will get better understandings of congruence and similarity in latter grades.
5. This course encourage your children to practice mathematics in real world with the set of teaching and games with their fellows. We hope students experience the convenience and excitement studying mathematics and eventually fall in love with mathematics.
