Fourth grade is a review and an extension of the knowledge learnt in the previous grades. In this course directed to fourth graders, we will review and enhance our grasp on arithmetic and the
base-ten system, further the research on fraction and deepen our understanding of 2-D diagrams.
1. Arithmetic and base-ten system: The scope of arithmetic will develop from 1,000 to 1,000,000. With the understanding multiplication in third grade, students will start to do multiplication of
multi-digit whole numbers. We will help students to develop fluency in different efficient methods of multiplying whole numbers. Together with their understanding in the base-ten system, students will develop generalizable procedures to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends.
2. Fraction equivalence and four operations of fractions: Students will recognize that some fractions lies on the exact same place on the number line, thus, understanding that these
fractions are equivalent. Students will then extend their understanding of unit fractions to develop complex fractions and decompose complex fractions to unit fractions.
3. Research on to two dimensional shapes: Students will be reveal to a new geometry concept —similar. By simply looking at diagrams, they will find, intuitively, that some graphs resembles in shape. The course aims to help students to understand the definition of similar in mathematics and how this definition complies with our logic.
3. Alert the students with the importance of using standard units. Abstract unit concepts like centimeters or inch will be learnt in practices, enabling them to estimate in standard units. Further, students will learn how to use rulers correctly to measure the distance.
4. The course in fourth grade aims to deepen student’s understanding in fundamental areas like base systems, arithmetic and geometry so students will be provided with a better basis for future
investigations like a different base-system, especially the base-two system, or to group theory that led light onto binary operations.
